Launch of our own Real Ale
We are very excited to have teamed up with The Growler Brewery (née Nethergate from Clare) to launch our very own ale to sell exclusively at our two pubs.
Mike and I went over to the "Brewery of the Year 2012" to meet the head brewer and design the beer that we thought most fitting. We have had Nethergate/Growler guest ales on at both pubs from the start. They have proved to be consistently popular and so we knew we were in safe hands.
It was the "Fuggles" hop that particularly took our fancy and we had fun mixing up a fine brew in their labs. We await your verdict - this can be work in progress as we finesse our ale, so all comments encouraged.
We launched our Red & Black Ale at our 5th Beer Festival at The Black Bull this July.
Tripadvisor Certificates All Round
In the last two months both pubs have reached the top 10% of businesses worldwide from customer reviews this year.
Thank you to all those who have been kind enough to drop in a review. While we are dependent upon your comment cards to hear what you would like us to change, it is also lovely to hear when we are doing well.
Both teams are to be congratulated on this impressive double achievement.
It also says a lot for Mike Champion and Peter Friskey, who must have clearly successfully split their time very evenly between the two pubs.
Mike and Peter go live on Star107 FM !
Our own double act took to the airwaves this April. In this special podcast the Star107 FM food and drink show's roving reporter, Maria Brannigan, visits the Black Bull in Balsham to find out about the pub, plus she does a live recipe section!
Congratulations to our sister pub Black Bull Balsham team, who continue their roll as they are revealed as winner of East Midlands and East Anglia - no small region and no small achievement. They got pipped in the national final by the pub that also won the overall title of pub of the year for all 15 categories.
This achievement follows closely on the heels of winning two awards for their amazing Pies:
...as well as being awarded an AA rosette for the quality of their food and 4 AA stars for their accommodation as well as being selected to feature in the merit-only Good Food Guide. They will be matching the number of our awards in no time!
Also, congratulations to our manager, Mike Champion, who has been crowned national Front of House Manager of the Year 2013
Our services are being increasingly sought after for private events, whether for a private party in one of our pubs or a special event at home or nearby private venue.
Each one is unique and tailor-made to the specific occasion. At each pub we put on a limited number of wedding receptions, as well as special birthdays/anniversaries and family gatherings. They range from drinks & canapés to buffets, to seated four-course dinners.
If you would like to discuss any celebration coming up that you might want some help with, please do get in touch with Mike, who would be very happy to help.
Mike was recently crowned Front of House Manager of the Year. Having been organising special events for most of his career, Mike brings a wealth of experience and a particular passion to this role.
Peter is the other vital ingredient to the Red & Black team - he can deliver whatever food you and Mike dream up and he loves a challenge.
"We had a really really fantastic time so thank you very much. We were really impressed with how the day went, it was just the feel we were after and the food was lovely. We really want to thank all the staff as well, everyone was really attentive, professional and friendly, which made the occasion - so many of our guests commented on this as well so please do pass on our thanks." 5th Beer Festival at The Black Bull Balsham
Well done to Mike for organising a great 5th Beer Festival at The Black Bull.
Most of the beers were from local breweries, with a few guests from further afield. Obviously the highlight (and the best selling) was our new Red & Black Ale brewed by local Growler Brewery to our specification.
The band Madness were almost first on the scene - wetting their whistles before their Newmarket Race Night gig.
